It is necessary to consider the size of the vehicle that you require before seeking to purchase a wheel loader. For example, it could be argued that the most common wheel loader model purchased is around 50 to 80 horsepower. This is relatively small, and these wheel loaders will have operating capacities of around 2000 to 5000 lbs. Larger mid-sized wheel loaders provide 100 horsepower to 300 horsepower and have operating capacities of 30,000 lbs or more. The biggest wheel loaders available are often used in the mining industries, and are, because of the large scale requirements involved, more specialist machines.

Although older wheel loaders generally employed mechanical levers operated by both hand and foot to manoeuvre the vehicle, newer wheel loaders tend to use two joysticks. These are beneficial in that they offer a high level of functionality. However, should you be used to working with older controls, you may wish to bear personal preference in mind.
